There are dozens of health apps set to launch for the Apple Watch, which recently shipped out to consumers worldwide, and some analysts believe Apple has sold 2 million units in as little as two weeks of preorders. As the Apple Watch captures significant interest, health app developers hope the device will provide the technology infrastructure to improve the efficacy of digital health tools. The company claims, “Fitness isn’t just about running, biking, or hitting the gym. It’s also about being active throughout the day,” and uses the promotion of, “Live a better day.”

With so many fitness and health apps to choose from, be sure to pick the ones that most align with measuring activity for fitness and health goals. Below are the five Apple Watch apps that caught our attention.

Nike+ Running

With the anticipation of the Watch, Apple is no longer selling the Jawbone UP, Nike+ FuelBand, or Fitbt devices in their stores. That said, they added the Nike+ Watch app into the featured set of fitness apps on Apple’s website. The app provides guidance and training to get you to take on running challenges and helps you track your progress so you can stay on track. MotionX combines your iPhone’s GPS and accelerometer for the most accurate tracking of your distance, pace, and time.

Strava

This app allows users to record runs and rides, track progress, and join Challenges for free. You will know how high you climbed, your average speed, distance, and heart rate in real-time as well as segment by segment updates to keep you pushing forward in your workout.

Runtastic

The Apple Watch will have the original Runtastic to track runs using GPS and includes a Glances feature to display an avatar to show you the right way to do each exercise. This helps the user working out follow along. Runtastic does two things right that a lot of fitness apps do wrong – it tracks multiple types of workouts and displays all relevant information on a single page, including distance and time.

MapMyRun

And yet, here is another running app that is worth checking out. Having a significant dedicated community to encourage a running lifestyle, the new Apple Watch app will also let enthusiasts log more than 600 different types of workouts, record GPS activities, sync and share activity on Apple Health and MyFitnessPal, and socially share workouts with friends.

Misfit

Granted they already have a popular wearable product for the wrist, Misfit recognized the importance of taking part in the watch platform last July, when they created a fitness app for the Pebble watch. Maintaining a hardware agnostic approach, Misfit has created an app for the Watch that will provide users with a total body workout, using body weight training, and circuit intervals.
